The medicine pathways in Western Australia
Everything below is published selection criteria — the hurdle you clear to be considered, whether the UCAT is used, whether there is an interview, and what carries the final offer. None of it is a cut-off: no Australian university publishes the score where its offers ran out.
| University | Program | UCAT | Interview | ATAR hurdle | What decides the offer |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Curtin University | Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery — 5 yrs | Yes | Yes (MMI) | 95 | ATAR 40%, MMI 40%, UCAT 20% — CASPer also required |
| University of Western Australia | Direct (Assured) Pathway to the MD — 3 yrs then MD 3 yrs | Yes | Yes (MMI) | 98 | MMI 50%, ATAR 30%, UCAT 20% — rural applicants scored on a different formula |

What actually matters here
Curtin requires CASPer as well as the UCAT, and it is 35% of the interview offer. Not a formality, not a box to tick the week before. It is more than a third of whether you get an interview at all, and it is the most commonly under-prepared component in WA admissions.
UWA rescores rural applicants on an entirely different formula. A rurality rating is worth 25% of a rural applicant's total before a single exam result is counted, and the academic weightings shrink to make room for it. If you qualify as rural in WA, UWA changes shape completely.
Curtin admits you directly into medicine; UWA does not. Curtin is a five-year MBBS from school. UWA's assured pathway is three years of a bachelor degree then three years of MD, with progression on a 5.5 GPA — no GAMSAT and no second interview.
Both universities run WA pools, and the interstate gap here is among the largest in Australia. Applicants report the local invitation line sitting near the 86th percentile at UWA while interstate applicants report needing something close to the 99.5th.
Put your own numbers against these
Enter your UCAT and predicted ATAR and the calculator shows where you sit at every pathway on this page — including the interview score each one would need from you, and whether it treats you as a local or an interstate applicant.
If you live in Western Australia
For a WA student, these two are the home advantage worth protecting: both reserve places for local applicants, and the difference between the local and interstate bar at UWA is larger than almost any state gap in the country. If you are in WA and considering medicine, sit CASPer properly and treat the MMI as the main event — it is 40% at Curtin and 50% at UWA.
If you are applying from interstate
Western Australia is the hardest state in the country to enter from outside. Both pathways reserve places for WA residents and interstate applicants report needing a near-perfect UCAT at UWA. If you are applying from the east coast, treat WA as an upside option rather than a foundation of your list.
How to apply
Applications for Western Australia go through TISC. You can apply to more than one state, and most serious applicants do — each state runs its own admissions centre with its own fee and its own preference list. List every pathway you are eligible for and would actually attend, in true preference order: centres work down the list and stop at the first offer you qualify for, so a long shot listed above a likely option costs you nothing.

The number still in your hands
Whichever pathway you lead with, the ATAR is on the list, and it is the only input with months of runway left. At the top of the range it is decided less by hours revised than by whether the same marks keep leaking out of the same places, paper after paper.
That is a measurement problem before it is a study problem. Most students cannot name the four errors costing them the most marks, because nobody writes them down — an error log fixes exactly that. errorboard does the logging for you: photograph your working, and it reads the page, names the mistake, categorises it, and files it by topic.
