Which Australian medical schools don't require the UCAT?

Is it easier to get into medicine without the UCAT?

No — the difficulty moves rather than disappears. Removing the UCAT concentrates the decision into the ATAR and the interview, so these pathways tend to have either a very high academic gate (Sydney at 99.95, Melbourne and Griffith at 99) or a heavy interview weighting. La Trobe's rural pathway has the lowest ATAR hurdle in the country at 80, but the interview is 70% of the decision.

Should I still sit the UCAT if I'm targeting no-UCAT pathways?

Almost always yes. Sitting it costs one morning and keeps 21 other pathways open; not sitting it removes them permanently, and at the tiebreaker universities such as Griffith an applicant with no UCAT is still considered but ranks last inside their ATAR band. Build your preference list around the no-UCAT pathways if the score disappoints, but do not decide that in advance.

What "no UCAT" actually buys you

Nothing is free here. Take the UCAT out of a selection formula and the weight it was carrying has to go somewhere, and it always goes to one of two places: the ATAR, or the interview. So the no-UCAT pathways split cleanly into "very high academic gate" and "the interview decides it", and which group suits you depends entirely on which of those two you are stronger at.

What it does buy is variance reduction. The UCAT is a single two-hour sitting with a real chance of an off day; the ATAR is a year of assessment and the interview is a skill you can rehearse. If your profile is consistent-and-strong rather than spiky, these pathways suit you even if your UCAT was fine.

The five medicine pathways

University of Melbourne — provisional entry

A pure hurdle system with no ranking formula at all: an ATAR of 99.00, an MMI, and a WAM of 75+ in your undergraduate degree. Clear all three and the MD place is yours. No UCAT, no GAMSAT.

Two things people miss. There is no separate VTAC preference for it — apply to any UniMelb course and you are automatically considered at 99+. And the MMI happens in the final year of your bachelor degree, not in Year 12, so the interview you have to prepare for is three years away.

University of Sydney — provisional entry

The highest academic gate in Australian medicine: 99.95 exactly, with no adjustment room. Get through it and the panel interview is 100% of the decision — your UCAT, had you sat one, would be irrelevant.

This is the most binary pathway on the list. It is not something you plan around; it is something you preference in case the ATAR lands.

James Cook University — MBBS

The most genuinely UCAT-free option, in the sense of being reachable rather than theoretical. Roughly half ATAR and half a panel interview, with an ATAR hurdle of 90 — and selection explicitly weights demonstrated interest in rural, remote, Indigenous and tropical health.

That last clause is not decoration. JCU is selecting for people who will practise in those settings, and the interview is built to test whether your interest is real. Apply direct to JCU as well as through QTAC.

La Trobe University — provisional entry (rural only)

ATAR 30%, MMI 70%, with an ATAR hurdle of 80 — the lowest academic threshold of any medical pathway in the country. MM3–MM7 locations attract additional bonus points. Rural applicants only; there is no metropolitan version of this.

If you qualify, this is the single highest-leverage entry on the list, because 70% of the decision is a skill you can practise deliberately over a year.

Charles Darwin University — Menzies program

Bachelor of Medicine, five years, ATAR 50% plus interview 50%, ATAR hurdle of 90, no UCAT. Strong NT and remote workforce focus in selection, and interstate applicants face a materially higher bar than NT residents.

And three in dentistry

At the tiebreaker universities — Griffith, Sunshine Coast, UTAS — applicants without a UCAT are still considered but rank last inside their ATAR band, which is a quiet way of saying it costs you places.

The right time to decide that your future runs through the no-UCAT pathways is after you have the score, when you are building a preference list, not in advance.

The weightings and ATAR hurdles above are published selection criteria. The score thresholds where offers historically run out are not published by anyone, and any figure you see quoted — ours included — is a calibrated estimate that moves year to year. Confirm eligibility rules against the university's current admissions page before you preference anything.

The other half of the application

Every pathway here has an ATAR hurdle, and three of them rank primarily on it.
