Which Australian medical schools have no interview?

Five school-leaver medicine pathways select without an interview: Griffith University and the University of the Sunshine Coast (ATAR ranked, UCAT as tiebreaker), the University of Tasmania (ATAR ranked, UCAT tiebreaker), Flinders University (ATAR 90% plus UCAT 10%) and the Charles Darwin–Flinders NT pathway, which uses the same Flinders formula. In dentistry, La Trobe, UQ and James Cook also select without an interview.

How much is the interview worth for medicine in Australia?

Anywhere from zero to everything. At the Newcastle/New England Joint Medical Program the final offer is 100% the Multiple Skills Assessment. Western Sydney and Charles Sturt weight the MMI at 75%, La Trobe's rural pathway at 70%, UQ and UWA at 50%, Monash and UNSW at one third, and Curtin and Adelaide at 40%. At eight pathways it is not weighted at all because there is no interview.

A Multiple Mini Interview: a circuit of short timed stations, each with its own scenario and assessor, rather than one long conversation. Newcastle's equivalent is the Multiple Skills Assessment — eight stations of eight minutes each, plus a Personal Qualities Assessment. Sydney and JCU use panel interviews instead, which are a single longer interview with several assessors.

Can you get into medicine if you are bad at interviews?

Yes, by preferencing deliberately. The ATAR-ranked pathways — Griffith, Sunshine Coast, UTAS, Flinders and UQ dentistry — never interview anyone, so the entire decision is your academic result plus a UCAT tiebreaker. The trade-off is that these pathways sit at the top of the ATAR range precisely because there is no second chance to make up ground.

Medicine and dentistry pathways with no interview (Australia)

The interview is the widest-varying part of the whole system

ATAR weightings range from 0% to 100% and UCAT weightings from 0% to a third. The interview spans the entire range and does so more often — it is the single biggest reason two applicants with identical results get opposite outcomes at two universities.

The eight with no interview at all

Griffith University — provisional entry to the MD

ATAR 100%, with the UCAT used only to split applicants inside an ATAR band. No interview. Around 20 places a year and an ATAR threshold that has sat in the 99.80–99.90 region. Applicants without a UCAT are still considered but rank last inside their band.

University of the Sunshine Coast — provisional entry

Same structure: ATAR 100%, UCAT as tiebreaker, no interview, hurdle of 95. Regionally focused and materially less competitive than Griffith — one of the few pathways where a strong ATAR alone is genuinely enough.

University of Tasmania — B Medical Science / MD

ATAR 100%, UCAT tiebreaker, hurdle of 95, no interview. Tasmanian applicants sit in a distinctly easier pool; interstate non-rural applicants have historically needed something very close to 99.95. Apply direct to UTAS rather than through a tertiary admissions centre.

Flinders University — B Clinical Sciences / MD

Entry score is ATAR 90% + UCAT 10%. No interview, so the result is effectively decided the day ATARs come out, and MD progression runs on a GPA hurdle with no GAMSAT and no second selection round.

Charles Darwin + Flinders — the NT pathway

The Flinders formula (ATAR 90% + UCAT 10%) run through an NT pathway to the same MD, and materially less competitive than the Adelaide-based entry. NT residency and rural background carry real weight. Interstate applicants face one of the largest penalties on the list.

Three in dentistry

La Trobe — Bachelor of Dental Surgery, ATAR 100%, no UCAT and no interview. The simplest selection process in Australian dentistry.
UQ — Bachelor of Dental Science (Hons), ATAR 99 threshold then the full UCAT, including Situational Judgement, as tiebreaker.
James Cook — Bachelor of Dental Surgery: no UCAT and no interview, but a scored written application plus references. Treat it as an interview you write down rather than as an absence of one.

The trade you are making. No interview means no second chance. At the interview-heavy pathways an average academic profile can be rescued in one morning; at the ATAR-ranked ones there is nothing after the results, which is exactly why their thresholds sit at the top of the range.

Getting the interview is a separate contest

At every university that does interview, there are two gates, and the first one removes most of the field. Invitation rules differ from the final formula more often than not:

Invite on UCAT alone: Western Sydney, Charles Sturt, Adelaide, UWA, Griffith dentistry. A near-perfect ATAR does not buy an interview here.
Invite on UCAT plus ATAR: UNSW, UQ, USQ, CQU, Curtin. Monash runs a December round on UCAT alone and a January round on UCAT plus ATAR.
No invitation contest: the ATAR-ranked schools above, plus Sydney and Melbourne where the academic gate is the filter.

Note the consequence for Newcastle's Joint Medical Program: the UCAT is the only thing that gets you into the room, and once you are in it, nothing you did before counts at all.

Interview formats are not interchangeable

Weightings, hurdles and interview formats above are published selection criteria. The score thresholds at which offers or interview invitations historically run out are published by no university — those are calibrated estimates and they shift each year with the field. Check current criteria on the university's own admissions page before you preference.

Whichever list you build, the ATAR is on it

All 29 pathways have an ATAR hurdle, and the eight above are entirely or almost entirely decided by it. The interview can be rehearsed in the months before it happens; the ATAR is being decided right now, mostly by whether you keep dropping the same marks in the same places.
