What ATAR do you need for medicine in Victoria?

The published hurdles are 90 at Monash, 99 at the University of Melbourne and 80 at La Trobe's rural-only pathway. Those are minimums to be considered, not competitive scores — at Monash the ATAR is only a third of the final rank, and at Melbourne it is effectively the whole decision, so a 99 hurdle there behaves very differently from a 90 hurdle at Monash.

Can you study medicine straight out of school in Victoria?

What actually matters here

Monash is the only Victorian pathway that admits you straight into medicine. Five years, no intermediate bachelor degree, and the only one of the three where a strong UCAT does heavy lifting — it is a full third of the final rank, alongside the ATAR and the MMI.

Melbourne's pathway is automatic, and it is not a medicine application. You apply to a Melbourne undergraduate course, and the provisional MD pathway runs off your ATAR. The interview happens in your final undergraduate year and is pass/fail — it cannot rescue a low ATAR, and a brilliant performance earns nothing extra. There is a full-fee component; check the cost before you preference it.

La Trobe publishes the lowest ATAR hurdle for medicine in Australia, and you probably cannot use it. The hurdle is 80, but the pathway is rural-only. If you qualify, the interview is 70% of the decision and this is arguably the most winnable medicine pathway in the country. If you don't, it is not an option at any ATAR.

Neither Monash nor Melbourne runs a formal Victorian pool — but interstate applicants report a materially higher bar at Monash anyway. That is the field, not a published rule.

If you live in Victoria

Victorian students have the widest spread of selection systems of any state to choose between without leaving home: a UCAT-weighted direct degree, an ATAR-only provisional pathway, and a rural interview-led pathway. If your UCAT went badly, Melbourne's pathway does not care. If your ATAR is strong but not 99, Monash is the one that still lists you.

If you are applying from interstate

Victoria is one of the more open states to apply into. Neither Monash nor Melbourne publishes a local quota, though interstate applicants consistently report needing a higher UCAT at Monash than Victorians do. La Trobe's rural pathway applies its own rural rules ahead of any state consideration.

Applications for Victoria go through VTAC. You can apply to more than one state, and most serious applicants do — each state runs its own admissions centre with its own fee and its own preference list. List every pathway you are eligible for and would actually attend, in true preference order: centres work down the list and stop at the first offer you qualify for, so a long shot listed above a likely option costs you nothing.

The number still in your hands

Whichever pathway you lead with, the ATAR is on the list, and it is the only input with months of runway left. At the top of the range it is decided less by hours revised than by whether the same marks keep leaking out of the same places, paper after paper.
