The medicine pathways in Tasmania

Everything below is published selection criteria — the hurdle you clear to be considered, whether the UCAT is used, whether there is an interview, and what carries the final offer. None of it is a cut-off: no Australian university publishes the score where its offers ran out.

What actually matters here

Your ATAR does all the work. No interview, no scored UCAT, no written application. Whatever your ATAR is when results are released, that is the answer, subject to clearing a 50th-percentile UCAT minimum.

Apply direct to UTAS, not through a tertiary admissions centre. This trips up mainland applicants every year. UTAS takes its own applications, on its own timeline.

The interstate gap here is one of the largest in the country. Tasmanian applicants and rural applicants clear this pathway well below what interstate metropolitan applicants need. Reported 2026-entry offers landed in the mid-90s for Tasmanian and rural applicants — the widely repeated claim that you need 99.95 from interstate overstates it, but the gap between local and outsider is real and large.

There is no dentistry pathway in Tasmania. Dental applicants need to look interstate — Charles Sturt in NSW has the lowest ATAR hurdle in Australian dentistry at 90, and La Trobe and James Cook require no UCAT.

If you live in Tasmania

For a Tasmanian student this is the most predictable medicine pathway in the country. There is no interview to prepare for and no aptitude test to rescue a weak year — every additional ATAR point converts directly, which makes the last few months of Year 12 unusually decisive here.

If you are applying from interstate

Interstate non-rural applicants face the highest bar at UTAS, and it is applied through both a higher effective ATAR requirement and the local pool. It is still worth an application if your ATAR is strong, because there is no interview lottery to survive — but do not build a preference list around it from the mainland.

How to apply

Applications for Tasmania go through direct application to UTAS. You can apply to more than one state, and most serious applicants do — each state runs its own admissions centre with its own fee and its own preference list. List every pathway you are eligible for and would actually attend, in true preference order: centres work down the list and stop at the first offer you qualify for, so a long shot listed above a likely option costs you nothing.

The number still in your hands

Whichever pathway you lead with, the ATAR is on the list, and it is the only input with months of runway left. At the top of the range it is decided less by hours revised than by whether the same marks keep leaking out of the same places, paper after paper.

That is a measurement problem before it is a study problem. Most students cannot name the four errors costing them the most marks, because nobody writes them down — an error log fixes exactly that. errorboard does the logging for you: photograph your working, and it reads the page, names the mistake, categorises it, and files it by topic.
