The medicine pathways in South Australia

Everything below is published selection criteria — the hurdle you clear to be considered, whether the UCAT is used, whether there is an interview, and what carries the final offer. None of it is a cut-off: no Australian university publishes the score where its offers ran out.

What actually matters here

Adelaide invites on the UCAT and nothing else. Your ATAR does not help you reach the interview — it only matters once you are in the room, where it becomes 40% of the offer alongside the MMI. That makes Adelaide unusually binary: the UCAT is a gate, then the UCAT barely matters.

Flinders is one of the few medicine pathways in Australia with no interview at all. Entry is 90% ATAR and 10% UCAT. If you interview badly, or would rather not stake a year on one, this is the most direct route in the country — and it means an outstanding ATAR converts almost one-for-one.

Adelaide ranks South Australian applicants in a separate, less competitive pool. Local applicants report interview invitations at meaningfully lower UCAT scores than interstate applicants, and rural SA applicants lower again.

Flinders treats Northern Territory applicants as local. One of only two cross-border local rules in the country — the other being Newcastle and the ACT.

If you live in South Australia

South Australians get a separate Adelaide pool and a no-interview pathway at Flinders, which between them cover both failure modes: a UCAT that went badly is survivable at Flinders, and a mediocre ATAR is survivable at Adelaide if the UCAT and interview are strong.

If you are applying from interstate

Adelaide applies an explicit interstate bar and applicants from outside SA report needing close to the 98th percentile for an invitation, against roughly the 80th for locals. Flinders weights the ATAR at 90%, so interstate applicants are competing almost purely on ATAR — and Northern Territory applicants are treated as local there.

How to apply

Applications for South Australia go through SATAC. You can apply to more than one state, and most serious applicants do — each state runs its own admissions centre with its own fee and its own preference list. List every pathway you are eligible for and would actually attend, in true preference order: centres work down the list and stop at the first offer you qualify for, so a long shot listed above a likely option costs you nothing.

The number still in your hands

Whichever pathway you lead with, the ATAR is on the list, and it is the only input with months of runway left. At the top of the range it is decided less by hours revised than by whether the same marks keep leaking out of the same places, paper after paper.

That is a measurement problem before it is a study problem. Most students cannot name the four errors costing them the most marks, because nobody writes them down — an error log fixes exactly that. errorboard does the logging for you: photograph your working, and it reads the page, names the mistake, categorises it, and files it by topic.
