The medicine pathways in New South Wales

Everything below is published selection criteria — the hurdle you clear to be considered, whether the UCAT is used, whether there is an interview, and what carries the final offer. None of it is a cut-off: no Australian university publishes the score where its offers ran out.

What actually matters here

Western Sydney and Charles Sturt are hurdle schools, and this is the single most misunderstood fact in NSW admissions. Clear 95.5 and your ATAR has finished working. Everything after that is your UCAT and, overwhelmingly, your interview — which is 75% of the ranking. Students with a 99.9 routinely lose these places to students in the mid-96s who interviewed better.

The Newcastle Joint Medical Program does not count your UCAT in the final offer at all. It uses it to decide who gets assessed, then ranks on the Multiple Skills Assessment. A perfect UCAT and a perfect ATAR are worth exactly one invitation here and nothing more.

Newcastle treats ACT applicants as local. There is no undergraduate medical school in the ACT — ANU's program is graduate entry — so for Canberra students the JMP is the closest thing to a home pathway, and Sydney and UNSW are the ordinary interstate-style options.

Sydney's provisional pathway gates at 99.95 and then decides on the interview. No UCAT at all. It is the narrowest gate in the country and, once through it, one of the purest interview contests.

Western Sydney and Charles Sturt both run NSW pools and rural sub-quotas. Living in the state matters at these two more than at UNSW or Sydney, which do not publish a local preference.

If you live in New South Wales

If you are in NSW, the two hurdle schools are the reason to take interview preparation as seriously as the UCAT. They lower their ATAR hurdle for NSW residents, they reserve places, and they hand three-quarters of the decision to a conversation. Nothing else in Australian admissions rewards that preparation as directly.

If you are applying from interstate

UNSW and Sydney do not publish a state preference, so they are the realistic interstate targets. Western Sydney, Charles Sturt and the Joint Medical Program all favour NSW residents, and applicants from outside report needing a substantially higher UCAT at all three. ACT applicants are treated as local by the JMP.

How to apply

Applications for New South Wales go through UAC. You can apply to more than one state, and most serious applicants do — each state runs its own admissions centre with its own fee and its own preference list. List every pathway you are eligible for and would actually attend, in true preference order: centres work down the list and stop at the first offer you qualify for, so a long shot listed above a likely option costs you nothing.

The number still in your hands

Whichever pathway you lead with, the ATAR is on the list, and it is the only input with months of runway left. At the top of the range it is decided less by hours revised than by whether the same marks keep leaking out of the same places, paper after paper.

That is a measurement problem before it is a study problem. Most students cannot name the four errors costing them the most marks, because nobody writes them down — an error log fixes exactly that. errorboard does the logging for you: photograph your working, and it reads the page, names the mistake, categorises it, and files it by topic.
